Boston travel and tourism

This is a topic for discussion about travel and tourism attractions in Boston and western Massachusetts. Feel free to talk about places you think are cool, places you plan to go to around the convention time, and also ask questions about things you are considering doing around the con.

Is the convention organizing a group to go to Fenway? I'm going to catch a game one way or another, but it's always more fun with friends!

I just read in PR6 that the con's got some tickets to a Red Sox game on Wednesday. How do I go about acquiring tickets?

Thank you!

Has anyone found a good online map of downtown Boston?

It seems that all the baseball tickets which had been reserved by the convention have been claimed. If you want to be on a waiting list (in case someone cancels), you can send email to tourism@noreascon.org.

"Has anyone found a good online map of downtown Boston?"

Keith,

Try this link:

(Oddly, there is no referral to Boston in the URL, and yet upon testing it seems to take one to the correct site.)

It is fully interactive: you can click on the map to zoom in, get details re subway lines, walking trails, and other tourist type info.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

David

We managed to get tickets at ticketsinaflash.com they were $80 but that's no more than a premiership soccer match but us Brits. You could try them if you want to go. Just type in Red Sox tix to Google and a load of agencies come up

Thank you David!

Anyone willing to walk me through taking mass transit to and from the Aquarium from the hotel. Arriving at the Aquarium at 9AM on a week day and returning at 1PM.

Please use words with very few syllables :-)

To get to the New England Aquarium, take a Green Line train (B, C, or D from Hynes station on Mass Ave. or E from Prudential Station or any from Copley) to Government Center.

At Government Center, change to the Blue Line (follow the signs to the Airport) and get off at Aquarium.

Plan on about a half hour all together.

The MBTA (Mass transit) has an excellent "Trip Planner" at http://trip.mbta.com/cgi-bin/itin_page_dhtml. pl

You can enter starting/ending points as addresses, intersections, subway/commuter rail stations or landmarks. Be warned that it may add in bus connections unless you ask it to minimize transfers.

How far is the Subway from the Sheraton? I want to visit the JFK Library, and I understand I need to take a subway downtown, transfer to another line then take a shuttle to the Library/Museum. Any locals with advice on how to place the bread crumbs to find my way back would be appreciated by this Los Angeles Member who hasn't ridden a bus/subway in 20 years.

National Geographic Traveler magazine (September 2004 issue) has an excellent and pithy article re Boston. It has a list of 34 items the visitor should (must?) do, with explanations, logistical info, and a pretty good map.

Unfortunately, this issue is not yet available online.

Hi Charlotte,

Go here: < http://trip.mbta.com/cgi-bin/itin_page_dhtml. pl >

and, in the "to" and "from" fields, select "landmark". Then, for the departure station, select "accommodation" and then find your hotel. For the "to" again select "landmark" and then find where you want to go. Refine your search and limit your walking distances by using the other filters.

Good luck!

For a delightful change from the Worldcon;I suggest a walk to the Boston Garden and a quiet ride on the Swanboats. I believe they are unique to Boston. I believe they will be still be open and running.
